Question Type: Category

Overview 

Category questions present a quantitative scale with defined values and descriptions to allow panelists to make a selection based on their perception of a sample or concept.    

In Compusense we have made it easier for you to add a Category question with preset number of points and descriptors that best meets your testing requirements, all in a click of a button. We have the following Category question types available:

  1. Category Liking : Also known as Category Hedonic scales. Panelists are presented with a hedonic scale of boxes, and are asked to select a category on the scale that represents their liking of an attribute for each sample. This question defaults to a nine-point scale with descriptors for each value, scaling from Dislike Extremely (value 1) to Like Extremely (Value 9). These parameters can be modified as necessary. 
  1. Category Intensity : Panelists are presented with a hedonic scale of boxes, and are asked to select a category on the scale that represents their perceived intensity of the attribute, for each sample. This question defaults to a nine-point scale with anchors Low (value 1) and High (value 9). These parameters can be modified as necessary.   
  1. Category JAR (Just about right) : This is a bipolar scale with intensity anchors on the endpoints (e.g., "much too weak", "much too strong") and a mid-point anchor of "just about right". This scale can be used to measure both the intensity and liking of product attributes such as colour appearance, aroma, texture, taste, etc. This question defaults to a five-point scale, with descriptors ranging from Too Little (value 1), Just-about-right (value 3) and Too Much (value 5) but can be modified as necessary. In combination with Category Liking question, Penalty Analysis can be run on Category JAR.
  1. Category Purchase Intent: Panelists are presented with a scale, and are asked to select a category on the scale that represents their purchase intent of an attribute for each sample. This question defaults to a five-point scale, with descriptors ranging from Definitely will not buy (value 1) to Definitely will buy (value 5).  
  1. Category Agree/Disagree : Panelists are presented with a scale, and are asked to select a category on the scale that represents their agreement of an attribute for each sample. This question defaults to include three attributes, using seven-point scales, with descriptors ranging from Strongly Disagree (value 1) to Strongly Agree (value 7).  

  2. Category Wheel: Panelists are presented with scale attributes arranged in a circular form (the wheel), and are asked to select the attribute that they perceive and then scale it. The question defaults to a 9-point intensity scale with descriptors ranging from Low (value 1) to High (value 9).

Question Compatibility 

Category questions are compatible with the following test types:

  1. Standard Test
  2. Survey
  3. Same/Different Test 

Add a Category Question

  1. From the Build screen, click Add element . 

  2. Expand Category and select the required Category question (e.g.  Agree/Disagree , Intensity ,  JAR, Liking, Purchase Intent, or Category wheel ). 

  3. Update the Question name and add any required panelist instructions at the question level.

  4. For each Attribute , update the Attribute name , and update the panelist instructions  if needed.
Notes Images can also be added in the panelist Instructions. 
  1. One attribute is already pre-populated (three in the Agree/Disagree question). Click  Attribute options and edit the first attribute to meet your requirements.  Then click Clone attribute to maintain the same formatting. Modify the scale to suit your needs. 
Notes
Text: The text to appear above the scale box. 

Value : the numerical value you've assigned to each box. This can be set to either show or hide in the  Question options . 
  1. Update the Attribute name and panelist instructions for newly cloned attributes.

The Question name is the label visible to analysts in the following areas:
  1. Question in the Build area of your test.
  1. Analysis Reports, Graphs and Exports.
Show question name to panelists 
Click to display the Question name to panelists or to hide it from them.
Display name
Enter the text that you wish to display to the panelist if your Question name is of a sensitive nature and should not be visible to them.
Sensitive Data
Click Yes to flag the collected results for this question as sensitive.

If the panelist unsubscribes or is deleted from the Panelists library by an administrator, their data collected in questions marked as sensitive will also be removed.

Data collected in questions that are not marked as sensitive will remain in your tests even after a panelist is unsubscribed/deleted.

Display Options in Category Questions

Option Name
Option Description
Show question
For all samples : The question will display for all the samples in your test.

Once (not sample related) : The question will display only once and will not be sample related. This is useful for collecting demographic data.

Same/Different response related : You can collect more information about the sample selected in a Same/Different question by adding a Choose question type that is Same/Different related. The sample selected by panelists in the Same/Different question will be identified in the follow-up question, as well as in the results. 

Any response related questions must appear after the respective question type.
Present question
Specify how you'd like the question to appear:
  1. Monadically/one sample at a time : This will display the question to the panelists one sample at a time. 
  1. All samples at first opportunity : This will display the question to the panelists for all the samples on the same page, in the first cycle through the questionnaire. 
  1. All sample at last opportunity : This will display the question to the panelist for all the samples on the same page, in the last cycle through the questionnaire. 
  1. First Cycle : This will display a Once (not sample related) question in the first cycle through the questionnaire. 
    In a test that has all not sample related questions (i.e. in the Survey test type), the question will be displayed in the order it is in the list of questions. 
  1. Last Cycle : This will display a Once (not sample related) question in the last cycle through the questionnaire.   
Show blinding code
Display the sample blinding code of the current sample.
Show values
Display the Values in the Attribute scales.
Condense attributes (show as matrix)
Display all attributes in the matrix (table) format in order to save space and share attribute scale descriptors.
Allow side-by-side test 
Displays the question side-by-side for all samples. With this option enabled, the question will need to be presented for All samples at first opportunity or All samples at last opportunity.
Category orientation
Defines whether values will ascend from left to right for a horizontal scale, or top to bottom for a vertical scale or descend. 
Evaluate image as sample
Displays the image file associated with the presented sample. Images can be uploaded to each sample in the Samples & design area.
Number of decimal places
Maximum of 3
Decimal symbol
Displays the decimal as a Period or Comma. 
Scale orientation
Displays the scale in a Horizontal or Vertical appearance.

Click to display the Attribute name to panelists or to hide it from them. 
Display name
Enter the text that you wish to display to the panelist if your Attribute name is of a sensitive nature and should not be visible to them.

Click Yes to flag the collected results for this question as sensitive. 

If the panelist unsubscribes or is deleted from the Panelists library by an administrator, their data collected in questions marked as sensitive will also be removed. 

Data collected in questions that are not marked as sensitive will remain in your tests even after a panelist is unsubscribed/deleted. 

Analysis

Click the  Results  tab to access and choose from the following analysis options: 

  1. Graphs  - Visual representation of the data.

  2. Data  - Raw data display for each attribute.

  3. Reports  - Create new or view previously generated reports. The following reports are compatible with the Category question type:
    1. Standard report - Detailed information about counts, means, Standard Deviation, the p-value, statistical decision, and Multiple Comparison Test.

    2. Summary report  - A list of all attributes included in the analysis and their means. This report provides a quick way of identifying whether there is a significant difference and if yes, in which attributes it lies.

    3. PowerPoint report  - Visual representation of the JAR and other Category scales data in the PowerPoint Report file format.

    4. Panelist summary report  - The  Panelist summary report  lists individual panelist scores for each attribute and sample. The report is ideal for panel training purposes.

    5. Raw data export  - Choose from the Multivariate, Univariate, and Multivariate Columnar raw data export formats to suit your exporting needs.
