Category Wheel Settings

Overview

The Category Wheel is a tool with many options that you can use to make the data collection run smoothly for optimal analysis, while providing dynamic and fun panelist experience.

Before you start reading further on this page about the steps for adjusting various settings for a CATA Wheel, if you have not already set one up, we recommend to first set the question up to help these steps make sense to you.

Set the Wheel Question Options

You can control how the wheel question behaves during the evaluation. There are various options to choose from, and we will use scenario based workflow to help you choose the right options.

Before we begin, click in the white space of the wheel question and click Question options.

You will find many options you are used to seeing and using in other question types, and you can update them as necessary, but we will not talk about them. Instead, we will focus on the options relevant to the wheel question type display and behaviour.

Scenario 1: I want panelists to rate all the attributes

If your objective is to have all attributes rated, even if they were not perceived, be sure to set the wheel up with the value of 0 included in the scale. That way, the panelists will be able to select 0 for the attributes that they did not perceive.

Once your wheel is set up with the right points, their values and descriptors, in the Question options, toggle the Answer required option to Yes.

This option is not compatible with any of the other wheel question specific options.

Scenario 2: I want to prompt panelists to rate the related inward attributes if they rated an outward attribute, but they don't have to rate all of them.

For this functionality to work, the question cannot be mandatory. In other words, first make sure that in the Question options the Answer required option is toggled to Yes. During the analysis you can decide how you want to handle the missing data.

In our example image below, we can see that a panelist clicked the "Vanilla" spice and was prompted to rate the inward attribute ("Sweet spice"), too. However, they are not required to rate the inward attributes. They are able to proceed to the next screen with just outward attribute rated.

To enable the functionality:

1. Go to the Question options.
   
   
2. Locate the Show all linked inward attributes option and toggle it to Yes.
   
   
3. If you do not wish to display below the wheel the scales that panelists rated, locate the Hide scales below wheel option and toggle it to Yes.
   
   
4. Save your changes.
   

In the example image, the inner most level is comprised of labels. Labels cannot be rated.

Scenario 3: I want panelists to rate all the related inward attributes if they rated an outward attribute before they can move on to the next screen.

For this functionality to work, the question cannot be mandatory. In other words, first make sure that in the Question options the Answer required option is toggled to Yes. During the analysis you can decide how you want to handle the missing data.

In our example image below, we can see that a panelist clicked the "Vanilla" spice and was prompted to rate the inward attribute ("Sweet spice"), too. They are required to rate the inward attributes before they are able to proceed to the next screen.

Scenario 6: I want all the inward attributes to be cleared automatically if all outward linked attributes are cleared.

For this functionality to work, the question cannot be mandatory. In other words, first make sure that in the Question options the Answer required option is toggled to Yes. During the analysis you can decide how you want to handle the missing data.

In our example animation below, we can see that a panelist cleared all the outward attribute ratings, "Vanilla" and "Clove". That automatically cleared out the rating of the inward linked attribute "Sweet Spices" because it did not have any other outward linked attributes with values in them.

To enable the functionality:

1. Go to the Question options.
   
   
2. Locate the Clear all linked inward attributes option and toggle it to Yes.
   
   
3. If you do not wish to display below the wheel the scales that panelists rated, locate the Hide scales below wheel option and toggle it to Yes.
   
   
4. Save your changes.

Scenario 7: I want all the outward attributes to be cleared automatically if an inward attribute is cleared.

For this functionality to work, the question cannot be mandatory. In other words, first make sure that in the Question options the Answer required option is toggled to Yes. During the analysis you can decide how you want to handle the missing data.

In our example animation below, we can see that a panelist cleared the "Sweet spices" attribute rating and that automatically cleared out all the outward linked attributes that had a rating in them.

To enable the functionality:

1. Go to the Question options.
   
   
2. Locate the Clear all linked outward attributes option and toggle it to Yes.
   
   
3. If you do not wish to display below the wheel the scales that panelists rated, locate the Hide scales below wheel option and toggle it to Yes.
   
   
4. Save your changes.

These are just some of the common scenarios that we outlined here. Feel free to use any combination of these options to explore if they can further enhance your testing needs and panelist experience.
