Build: Pause

Build: Pause

Overview

The Pause text screen is useful for providing longer breaks (15+ minutes, or hours, or even days long) between samples, or within a sample, or in the middle of a non-sample survey. It can particularly be useful for at home testing because it allows panelists to evaluate the samples at their own speed and convenience.

For lab testing we recommend using Partial Present feature whenever that is possible.
For breaks under 15 minutes feel free to use one of the other text screens instead.

Test Compatibility

Pauses are compatible with all test types.

Add a Pause

  1. In your test, go to the Build tab.

  2. On the left, locate and click, or drag and drop the Pause into your questionnaire.

  3. Update the screen name if desired, and click Add panelist instructions for this cycle to add instructions for your panelists. You can always update this text later as needed.

Pause Options

Click Options at the cycle level (the orange coloured one) to access a list of options available to further customize your Pause. See further details below.

By default, the Pause will display in a specific cycle (the first cycle), it is mandatory for panelists to pause the test, the pause will last for 12 hours, and reminders will not automatically be sent out to panelists. However,  you can update all these details to suit your testing needs.

  1. To change when the Pause will appear in the questionnaire, click the Appears in what cycle list and select the option that best suits your testing needs.

    1. All cycles - the screen will be displayed to panelists in all cycles (with every sample). This can be useful if the Pause is expected within a sample, not between samples.

If you select this option in a Pause that is expected to appear between samples, then you will force panelists after their last sample to click Pause, then wait until the set time lapses, then log back in, and finally click Finished. They will not enjoy doing that and it will delay your data collection, so we don't recommend using this option in a Pause that is expected to appear between samples.

    2. First cycle - select this option to display the screen only during the first cycle (or first sample in product tests). You might have a scenario where you require a Pause or you would like to give panelists an option to pause after the first sample, or within a survey test (without samples).

    3. All but last - the screen will display to panelists with every sample except for the last one. This selection is useful if extended breaks are needed between samples. Panelists will not be required to wait for the same extended break after their last sample before they can click Finished.

    4. Last cycle - select this option to display the screen only during the last cycle (or last sample in product tests). You might have a scenario where you require a Pause or you would like to give panelists an option to pause in the middle of the last sample.

    5. Specific cycle - select this option and specify the cycle you wish the Pause to appear in. Set the Pause fully as needed and clone it to customize Pauses for other cycles, if any. This selection is useful if the instructions are different for different cycle, or if you need the Pause to appear in a cycle that is not the first, not the last, and do not need it in all other cycles.

  2. If you wish to make the Pause optional, first specify the duration described in the next step, and then toggle the Optional option to Yes. Panelists will be able to advance to the next screen if they choose to, but will have the Pause button available to them to click if they choose to. If they attempt to resume the paused test before the set time lapses, they will see a message informing them how much time is left before they can resume.

  3. Specify the duration of your mandatory or optional pause. The pause can last for days, hours, down to minutes. Panelists will not be able to resume the test until the duration you set lapses.

  4. To send email reminders to panelists that their pause is ending soon, toggle the Send email reminders that pause is ending option to Yes.
    1. Update the preset Subject and Reply name as necessary.

    2. Keep the Reply email unchanged if it has "@compusensecloud.com", or "@at-hand.net" email domain. This is an important emailing best practice to prevent getting you flagged as a spoofer.

Alternatively if you know that your company domain has been approved to send emails from within Compusense, then you can use your corporate domain. If not sure whether this is the case, please contact Compusense Support to verify.

    3. Update the email body as necessary. The wildcard included in the default text is useful to display to panelists the exact date and time when they can resume their test. Feel free to insert additional wildcards to personalize the message.

    4. Set the first reminder up as desired. Choose the option that best suits your testing needs. The default selection is When pause expires. This can be not only first, but also the only reminder that you send out if the pause is not very long in total.

    5. If your pause is lengthy, it may be beneficial to send a second reminder closer to the pause expiry time or when the pause actually expires. By default, the Send second reminder option is set to None.

If you attempt to set the second reminder to be sent before the first reminders is sent out, or to send the second reminder at the same time as the first reminder, you will receive an error message preventing you from doing that.

  5. To send email notifications to panelists that their pause has ended, toggle the Send email reminders that pause has ended option to Yes.

Feel free to insert wildcards to personalize the message.

    4. Select when you want the reminder to be sent to panelists. The default selection is 1 hour after pause expires.

  6. Click Save to save the changes and close the Options.

Clear Pauses

It can happen that panelists are in a paused state but you need them to resume sooner than originally anticipated. You as an analyst have the tool to clear pauses in two areas of the software. Pauses can be cleared for one panelist at a time.

Clear Pauses Inside A Test:
  1. In your test, go to the Panelists tab.

  2. Locate the paused panelist that you wish to unpause. In the Testing status column the panelist will have the status Paused followed by a play icon (a small triangle pointing to the right). Click the play icon.

  3. Click Unpause panelist to confirm your action.

Clear Pauses In A Test Monitor:
Another place where you can clear pauses is in the Monitor.
  1. Open the test that has paused panelists.

  2. In the top right-hand corner of the test, click on the Monitor button.

The Monitor will open in a new browser tab. Go to that newly opened monitor tab.

  3. Click the Progress tab.

  4. Locate a paused panelist for which you wish to clear the pause and click Clear pause.

  5. Confirm your action by clicking Clear pause.
