Build: Text Screens

Overview

During the data collection it can be beneficial to provide general instructions or information to panelists before they begin evaluation (before they see the first question), or to provide additional instructions between questions, or to allow panelists to cleanse their palate between samples, or to take extended breaks (pauses) between samples and resume later, etc. It can be also beneficial to display to panelists how much time they have left in their break.

All this and more can be accomplished with Text screens.

Text Screen Types

There are several types of text screens to choose from, each designed for different purpose. How you use these different text screens will depend on the test type you are building.
  1. Text - cycle related.
A text screen without a timer available in all test types. Panelists can click Next on this screen whenever they want to. This text screen is useful for displaying text and images anywhere within the questionnaire, at a desired cycle.

  2. Text - sample related.
A text screen with an optional countdown timer, available only in Standard test type. This text screen is useful for displaying text and images, with or without a timer for specific samples.

  3. Time delay.
A text screen with a mandatory countdown timer available in all test types. Panelists can click Next on this screen only when the time you set lapses. You can display onscreen messages accompanied with a sound at specific intervals during the break (optional) for additional reminders to panelists to stay on the task. This text screen is useful for providing relatively short breaks (less than 15 minutes) between samples to allow panelists to cleanse their palate, for example.

For extended breaks (15+ minutes), we recommend using the Pause feature outlined further down on this page.

  4. Familiarization.
This text screen is available only in A-not A tests. Its purpose is to enable panelists to get familiar with the 'A' and/or 'Not A' samples before the actual sample evaluation.

These text screens can be set with a short delay/countdown timer. You can also select an appearance option to show the Familiarization/Reminder text screen in designated question cycles; it doesn't have to appear only at the start of the test.

All samples have their own Familiarization/Reminder blinding codes.

The blinding codes are available in the Serve Report and they also display in the Test Monitor.

  5. Start/end page.
A text screen without a timer available in all test types. This text screen is useful for displaying text and images in tests with dynamic designs, or tests with multiple sections that are randomized, but it can be used in all other test scenarios. The text screen can be displayed right after the Welcome screen before panelists get into the questionnaire, or at the end of the test, just before the Thank you screen.

  6. Pause.
A text screen available in all test types. It can be a required or optional pause. When set up as a required pause, panelists must click the Pause button and cannot resume the test until the time you set lapses.

When set up as an optional pause, panelists can click the Pause button but they don't have to; they can continue with their evaluation if they choose to. If they click the Pause button, they cannot resume the test until the time you set lapses.

This text screen is useful for providing longer breaks (15+ minutes, or hours, or even days) between samples or within a sample for at home testing, for example. For lab testing we recommend using Partial Present feature whenever that is possible.

  7. Requestable instructions.
A text screen available in all test types. This text screen can be enabled at the question level, at the attribute level, or at the section level (see Logistics > General test options > Enable requestable section instructions).

Workflows for setting up each of text screen types will be available soon!

Add a Text Screen

  1. In your test, go to the Build tab.

  2. On the left:
    1. If adding a text screen other than Pause, click the Text/time delay arrow to expand the menu.

Click or drag and drop the text screen type you wish to add to your test. The list you see might be different from the above screenshot, depending on the test type you are building.

    2. If adding a Pause, look further down on the left and click or drag and drop the Pause into your questionnaire.
