Wildcards

Wildcards

Overview

Compusense offers an amazing feature, called "Wildcards". Wildcards are text placeholders that you can insert in instruction screens and email texts. At the time of presentation to panelists the wildcard is dynamically replaced with the appropriate information.

Where Can I Find Wildcards?

Wildcards can be found in the following areas of Compusense where text screens exist:
  1. Questionnaire (questions and Text screens). These can be found in the Build tab.

  2. Emails. Email composing screens can be found wherever the panelists can be selected, such as within a test, inside the Panelists library, in the Schedules module's Panelists tab, in the Logistics tab when emailing sample set links to panelists, and when scheduling reports to automatically email out to specified recipients based on the selected triggers.

  3. Schedule instructions. Onscreen instructions and confirmation messages for panelists that successfully book themselves can be personalized within the Schedules module using wildcards.

What Do Wildcards Look Like?

When you insert a wildcard, it will look like a string of unusually combined characters. For example, to personalize a test, you can include a wildcard for the first name of panelists in your Welcome screen.  Your view might look something like this:

When panelists log in to the test, they will be greeted by their name. Their view might be something like this:

Another example, you can include a wildcard for the sample blinding code in the text of a question. Whenever the question appears to panelists, the wildcard is replaced by the sample blinding code generated from the test design.

  3. You can also create custom wildcards that are based on responses panelists have made in previous ranking or choice questions.

  4. For Partial Present , you can use special wildcards to make each Partial Present block more specific.

  5. Scheduling module has its own set of wildcards that can assist you with your scheduling needs. An example list:

Insert a Wildcard

The steps for inserting wildcards in any of the text screens in Compusense are the same. The difference is in accessing the area containing the text screen where you wish to insert a wildcard.

Our example below is for inserting wildcards in the Welcome screen, so please adjust your first step according to the question, email, or another text screen in which you wish to insert a wildcard.
  1. In your test, go to the Build tab and click inside the Welcome screen. Click exactly where you wish the wildcards to appear before going to the next step.

  2. In the menu bar, click Wildcards.

  3. Click on the Select a wildcard list to see what is available in the particular screen type you are in. Different portions of the software have different list of wildcards. Select the Panelist - First Name wildcards and click Insert.

This will insert the selected wildcard in the exact spot where your cursor was before you clicked the Wildcards icon.

Alternatively, you can use the Copy to clipboard button to copy the wildcard and paste it where you wish to.
