Overview
The
Check All That Apply (CATA) Wheel is a tool with many options that you can use to make the data collection smooth for your analysis purposes, while providing dynamic and fun panelist experience.
Before you start reading further on this page about the steps for adjusting various settings for a CATA Wheel, if you have not already set one up, we recommend to first
set the question up to help these steps make sense to you.
Set the Wheel Question Options
You can control how the wheel question behaves during the evaluation. There are various options to choose from, and we will use scenario based workflow to help you choose the right options.
Before we begin, let's go over the mandatory settings first that do not depend on any specific scenarios:
- Click in the white space of the wheel question and click Question options.
- Toggle the Answer required option to No.
- Locate the Hide scales below wheel option (close to the bottom of the list of options) and toggle it to Yes.
You will find many other options you are used to seeing and using in other
question types, and you can update them as necessary, but we will not talk about them here. Instead, we will focus
on the options relevant to the wheel question type display and
behaviour.
Scenario 1: I want the related inward attributes to automatically get selected if a panelist selected a related outward attribute, but panelists don't have to keep the inward attributes selected.
For this functionality to work, the question cannot be mandatory. In other words, first make sure that in the
Question options the
Answer required option is toggled to
No. During the analysis you can decide how you want to handle the missing data.
In our example video below, we can see that a panelist clicked the "Vanilla" spice and that action automatically selected the inward attribute ("Sweet spice"), too. The same happened when they selected "Woody" outward attribute; the "Resinous" inward attribute was automatically selected. However, they will not be required to rate the inward attributes. That means that if they choose to uncheck an inward attribute, they will be able to proceed to the next screen with just outward attribute selected.
To enable the functionality:
- Go to the Question options.
- Locate the Show all linked inward attributes option and toggle it to Yes.
- Save your changes.
In the example video, the inner most level is comprised of labels. Labels cannot be rated.
Scenario 2: I want all the related inward attributes to automatically get selected if a panelist selected an outward attribute before they can move on to the next screen.
For this functionality to work, the question cannot be mandatory. In other words, first make sure that in the
Question options the
Answer required option is toggled to
No. During the analysis you can decide how you want to handle the missing data.
In our example video below, we can see that a panelist clicked the "Vanilla" spice and that action automatically selected the inward attribute ("Sweet
spice"), too. The same happened when they selected "Woody" outward
attribute; the "Resinous" inward attribute was automatically selected. And same with the "Corn Grits" outward attribute; when it was selected, the "Grain" inward attribute was automatically selected. If a panelist decided to deselect any of the inward attributes and clicked Next, they would be presented with a message listing all the inward attributes that they manually deselected but require selecting before they are able to proceed to the next screen.
To enable the functionality:
- Go to the Question options.
- Locate the Show all linked inward attributes option and toggle it to Yes.
- Right below it, toggle the Require response for all linked inward attributes option to Yes.
- Save your changes.
In the example video, the inner most level is comprised of labels. Labels cannot be rated.
Scenario 3: I want the related outward attributes to automatically get selected if
a panelist selected a related inward attribute, but panelists don't
have to keep the outward attributes selected.
For this functionality to work, the question cannot be mandatory. In other words, first make sure that in the
Question options the
Answer required option is toggled to
No. During the analysis you can decide how you want to handle the missing data.
In our example video below, we can see that a panelist clicked the
"Sweet
spices" inward attribute and that action automatically selected all the related outward attributes ("Vanilla", "Clove", and "Anise"). The same happened with "Nutty" and "Roasted" inward attributes. The panelist was able to deselect "Anise" outward attribute from the "Sweet
spices" and proceed to the next screen without any issues.
To enable the functionality:
- Go to the Question options.
- Locate the Show all linked outward attributes option and toggle it to Yes.
- Save your changes.
In the example video, the inner most level is comprised of labels. Labels cannot be rated.
Scenario 4: I want at least one related outward attribute to be
selected if a panelist selected an inward attribute before they can
move on to the next screen.
For this functionality to work, the question cannot be mandatory. In other words, first make sure that in the
Question options the
Answer required option is toggled to
No. During the analysis you can decide how you want to handle the missing data.
In our example video below, we can see that a panelist clicked the "Sweet
spices" inward attribute and that action automatically selected all the related
outward attributes ("Vanilla", "Clove", and "Anise"). The same happened
with "Nutty" and "Roasted" inward attributes. The panelist then
deselected all outward attributes from the "Sweet
spices" ("Vanilla", "Clove", and "Anise"), but when they clicked Next they could not proceed to the next screen without selecting at least one of the outward attributes for the "Sweet
spices" or deselecting the "Sweet
spices" too if it is not applicable/perceived.
To enable the functionality:
- Go to the Question options.
- Locate the Show all linked outward attributes option and toggle it to Yes.
- Right below it, toggle the Require response for all linked outward attributes option to Yes.
- Save your changes.
In the example video, the inner most level is comprised of labels. Labels cannot be rated.
Scenario 5: I want all the inward attributes to be cleared/unchecked automatically if all outward linked attributes are cleared/unchecked.
For this functionality to work, the question cannot be mandatory. In other words, first make sure that in the
Question options the
Answer required option is toggled to
No. During the analysis you can decide how you want to handle the missing data.
In
our example video below, we can see that a panelist cleared/unchecked the
outward attribute "Licorice" and that action automatically cleared/unchecked the inward linked attribute, "Savoury Spices". The same happened with the "Sweet Spices" and "Nutty" when panelists cleared/unchecked the
outward linked attributes.
To enable the functionality:
- Go to the Question options.
- Locate the Clear all linked inward attributes option and toggle it to Yes.
- Save your changes.
In the example video, the inner most level is comprised of labels. Labels cannot be rated.
Scenario 6: I want all the outward attributes to be cleared automatically if an inward attribute is cleared.
For this functionality to work, the question cannot be mandatory. In other words, first make sure that in the
Question options the
Answer required option is toggled to
No. During the analysis you can decide how you want to handle the missing data.
In
our example video below, we can see that a panelist cleared/unchecked the
"Sweet
spices" attribute and that automatically cleared/unchecked all the outward linked attributes that were checked. The same happened with the "Nutty" attributes.
To enable the functionality:
- Go to the Question options.
- Locate the Clear all linked outward attributes option and toggle it to Yes.
- Save your changes.
In the example video, the inner most level is comprised of labels. Labels cannot be rated.
These are just some of the common scenarios that we outlined here. Feel free to use any combination of these options to explore if they can further enhance your testing needs and panelist experience.
